My Learning Network
Cross-posted on Learning Curve and Changing Connections
My educational mantra this year is professional learning networks. Web 2.0, School 2.0, and learning and teaching in the 21st century is about creating an effective learning network. The strength and quality of your life-long learning relates to the people in your network. Here’s my learning network (okay, not the baby) and I am so proud to learn from them every day. [You really want to click on the last link in this paragraph--he’s a fifth grade student keynoter and you want to hear his message.]
Special thanks to Brad Fountain for his TouchGraph photo on Facebook. I’m so glad to be part of this learning community.

Senator for a Day
More than 40 students from SHS attended Senator for a Day held at DeSales University on October 23. Participants experienced a day in the life of working within a legislative body and were interactive with their district’s Senator Wonderling. According to our students, they enjoyed the debate with other schools over pressing issues. Real-life issues, real-life learning, an excellent experience.
The following video was created by Miss Brinson.

When you cannot get technology to do what you want, try another application, or check your RSS feed. That’s how I found Scribd, compliments Jennifer Dorman’s Grazr feed.
Or you can grap the embeddable code from your Google Docs account by uploading a slideshow and then publishing it to your wiki or blog.
Or you could upload your .ppt file to your SlideShare account.

The Me Decade
Cross-posted on Changing Connections and The Learning Curve
Try as I would, I was never able to upload any of the IP presentation videos. I did, however, succeed in uploading Jade Letlow and Sam Heddlesten’s independent research project, The Me Generation--1970-1979: How Could Establishment and Anti-Establishment Exist? Here it is.

Newseum + LVECU = On-Site Project-Based Learning at its Best!
Cross-posted on Changing Connections
On October 2, 2008, 30 students (24 IP and 6 IP senior assistants) traveled to the Newseum in Washington, DC, to conduct primary source research in the world’s most interactive museum. While there, students participated in a Learning Center Photo Op event, created their first green screen, and captured primary source research the best way project-based learning can happen: on-site! We could not have made this trip without the generous grant from the Lehigh Valley Educators Credit Union, who provided the funding for the admission fees and the green screen experience.

Hack the Debate III + Current + Twitter = Real-Time Collaboration
It was FWalsh’s tweet that caught my eye. I was uploading videos and photos from the 2 October 2008 Newseum Field Trip to DC when the pop-up twitter message caught my eye. I have Twitterfox added to Firefox and the result is I see a blue rectangle pop up at the bottom of my browser each time my twitterverse twitts on TwittEarth. That’s how I realized I was missing the debate. So I went to my Twitter tab and caught the conversation--but with one huge bonus. I could click on the Twitter link, Hack the Debate, and get involved in a different way.
Hack the Debate lets you add your Twitter posts to the live broadcast of the 2008 Presidential Debates. Very cool to see the messages stream across the screen in real time. Powered by Current, this television network gives you the opportunity to create and influence what airs on TV. The new look and feel of collaboration happens 24/7 on broadcast tv networks, but each new improvement to social networking amps the collaborative output. Consumers, commentors, creators merge at the confluence of real-time 21st century learning and teaching. And to the promoters of Twitter as “eye candy, “always great visuals,” or “a great way to waste time,” I can only say that a Web 2.0 tool is only as good as the user’s use. A special thanks to Megan’s dad, FWalsh, for showing me yet another fascinating way to engage in the real-world learning using social media for professional learning networks. Can you see the potential for any history class joining in the conversation as Hack the Debate IV, the final debate, airs on Wednesday, October 15. (I’ll be there). Purely rhetorical. Exciting times, and you got your SAT word (or two) for the day, too.

Thanks to the creative genius at The Common Craft Show, Lee and Sachi LeFever, and their explanations ”in plain English.” If you are not using Google Docs, this short video just might convince you it’s a great way to take the next step in social networking, from consumer to creator and collaborator.
