Ralph Waldo Emerson’s “The Young American” Q & A’s

1.) What is the format of “The Young American?”
Emerson wrote his opinions, with point counterpoint to support them.

2.) What is the article’s thesis?
Emerson feels and supports that expanding ways/means of transportation is a positive.  However, it can also be a negative because of its affects on nature and humans’ mindset on nature.

3.) What other writers would align with Emerson’s beliefs in this essay?
Thomas Paine and Whitney Houston (or whoever wrote the song if she didn’t) are two people who would agree with Emerson’s beliefs.

4.) *extra credit: What is the significance of playing Whitney Houston’s “The Greatest Love of All?”
In the song, Houston sings the lines, “I believe that children are our future, Teach them well and let them lead the way.” This reflects Emerson’s thoughts on how the children are the leaders of the future; they are the ones who will be carrying the country years later.  Their education, ideas, and actions are important in this respect.
