1.  It is a piece supporting American manifestation.  It contains Emerson’s opinions about trade and the effects that land can give to a country.

2.  The youth of the new America need to take advantage of America’s resources and opportunities to create a stronger America.

3.  Adams would agree with Emerson in their belief that America needs trade and transportation to become powerful.  Jefferson would also agree with Emerson that the future of America lies in the common, “young American”.

The Young American

1. I believe that this article is Deconstruction because Emerson breaks down what America is composed of, technology, and what improvements we have made as a united country. It could also possibly be a Manifesto, because towards the end Emerson almost preaches about America.

2. The thesis is about power and the young americans. Young Americans are the key to advance the power America’s future.

3. Jefferson because of the agreements with the common people and some rebellion to keep government in check. And also Adams because they look into the advances of America. Paine because both had similar content and opinions.

Extra Credit- Greatest Love of All played because the children are the future of America. And they are important in order to continue the advancement of America’s future

“The Young American”

1. The format for the “Young American” is a vision type reading. Ralph Waldo Emerson writes about his vision for the future. This could also be a propagana type of reading. In class we also discussed that this writing is a deconstruction type of reading.
2. The articles thesis is that young americans should and are helping the country become a beacon of prosperity, morality and justice. (future)
3. One writer that would align with Emerson’s beliefs in this essay would probably be Jefferson. Another person may be Adams. I might even stretch to say that Washington may have been supportive of Emerson’s beliefs.
BONUS: The song called the Children of the Future was playing during class because it has to do with the “Young American.” The song talks about how important the children of the future are becuase they decide what the future will hold. This relates to Emerson’s paper because he is stating that the young americans must take hold of their future because if they do not there is a chance of America falling out of the leading nation position. If the young americans do not help their country prosper the country could potentially become inferior.

“The Young American”

The format of Young American is mostly opinion by the author, and then he utilizes facts and background to support his opinions. By giving his opininon, he deconstucts technology and transportation. Emerson deconstructs the We have seen prior articles like this one, except the evidence was primary source like Washington’s letter.

The thesis of the article is America is expanding and maturing and is surpassing its mother country Europe because of its youth.

Jefferson, Ford, and Thomas Paine.

EC: The song was played because there was a line about children being the future.

“The Young American”

1) The format of Ralph Waldo Emerson’s “The Young American” is written as a manifesto. In this selection he describes what the intentions of the United States government have been in the past, and what he perceives them to be in the future. Emerson relates America’s trade relations and democratic government to its future position as the leading world power. This format differs from most of the other formats we dealt with in the packet; however it demonstrates some similarities to Thomas Paine’s “Common Sense.” Paine used this document as propaganda to secure support for the American Revolution. Similarly, Emerson used “The Young American” to increase patriotic sentiment in America and instill confidence in the nation.

2) The thesis of this article is “America is the country of the future.” Ralph Waldo Emerson reiterates America’s great trade relations, internal developments, and effective government, all of which will eventually lead to America’s development into a world power.

3) Henry David Thoreau would also write in this format, and share many of Ralph Waldo Emerson’s beliefs. Both of them were transcendentalists and expressed the same views regarding America’s success as a world power.

Extra Cedit: This song was played because it expressed the belief that children are our future because they will determine our fate. This is the same basic belief expressed by Ralph aldo Emerson in “ The Young American.”

Young American

1. The format of “Young American” is a basic essay format. Emerson states his thesis and then follows it up with a multitude of supports. We have discussed articles like this already in class.

2. Emerson’s thesis is that America’s youth is beginning to have an impact in everday life in society, while Europe’s youth seems to be fading as far as their participation in society. Perhaps America’s rugged individualist spirit contributed to this thesis.

3. Thomas Paine would agree with Emerson’s thoughts.

2. Emerson’s thesis is that America’s youth is beginning to have an impact in everday life in society, while Europe’s youth seems to be fading as far as their participation in society. This is leading to America becoming more influential in world affairs than England.

3.  Paine, Jefferson, Adams would agree.

Emersonnn!

1. The format of Emerson’s “The Young American” is a manifesto, unlike others we have worked with in the packet.

2. In my own words, the thesis of “The Young American” is the importance of technology in overcoming obstacles, such as distance, and allowing the youth and upcoming generations of America to develop trade.

3. Other writers include Thomas Paine, Thomas Jefferson, and John Adams.

Extra Credit* - - The lyrics of this song talk about the significance that the current youth will have in the future. Also, this song was playing so that we could listen to some kickin’ beats. tongue laugh

Emerson’s Young American

1.  I think the format of “The Young American,” is a hybrid.  I think it is a mixture of opinion along with deconstruction to make his manifesto.

2.  The thesis of this article is to improve the transportation of trade in order to empower America because it is the country of the Future, since it is the beginning of projects, designs, and expectations.

3. Other writers that would work off of Emerson’s beliefts in his particular essay I think would be Franklin because he was always about expanding on bigger brighter ideas.  Franklin knew that although there are faults to every idea good will come through the struggle.  I also thought Jefferson could agree with Emerson because Jefferson was for the people.

“The Young American” by Emerson

1. The format to “The Young American” would be something new that we have not discussed yet.  I feel that it is new because it does not cover the other genres we have discussed.  It does not try to get others on board with propaganda and is not written to another person, in a lettter format.  This is Emerson’s way of saying what he feels is right for America; no discussion necessary.
**After discussing in class, Neil brought up a great point; that Emerson simply deconstructs his ideas.  He scaffolds his ideas through discussion of technology for improving America.  Giving the public an idea of organizing thoughts through this technique, allows them to almost simply agree with Emerson.

2. “The Young American” thesis is by utilizing the facilities that we have in America, we will be able to prosper and grow faster and successfully.

3. Other writers that would align with Emerson’s beliefs would include Thomas Paine.  He has a vast amount of opinion and focuses his time on getting others to agree with him.  That is what seperates both men apart; getting the public to agree or disagree with their points.  Their format is differently but their content is very similar; not directly document based, however full with opinion and common knowledge.  Another author that would align with Emerson would be Thomas Jefferson because it would be something for the common people, something that could benefit the common man.  They both want everyone to be able to benefit.

4 Extra Credit. I think you played that song for us because it directly targets everyone. It discusses everyone getting the chance to prosper and get something out of life and love.

Emerson Shmemerson

1. The format of “The Young American” is an opinion peice without primary source support it may also be seen as a piece of propaganda.

2. The thesis of “The Young American” states improvments ‘It is the country of the future because it is a country of beginnings, of projects, of designs, and expectations.’

3. I believe that Adams and Mr. Thomas Jefferson believe in the items in Emerson’s writings. They agree with the national vision of the common man.

EC. Because it is a great song… DUH! and the singer believes that children are the future as stated in the first line of the song.  smile

Emerson’s “The Young American”

1. The format of “Young American” is a combination of Emerson’s vision and opinions. He gently introduces his points, but does not include counterpoint arguments.

2. The article’s thesis is “America is the country of the future; it is a country of beginnings, of projects, of designs, and expectations.”

3. Other writers would share similar ideas to those of Emerson. Many believe that America is one of the strongest among the nations.

Ex. Crd. - The lyrics of “The Greatest Love of All” by Whitney Houston reflect Emerson’s views in “Young American.” The line, “I believe that children are our future,” included in the song supports the idea that children of today’s society will grow and contribute to the nation’s future success.

2. What is the article’s thesis?
Youth need to use their power of being American to perpetuate general justice and humanity.

3. What other writers would align with Emerson’s beliefs?
Thomas Jefferson would agree with Ralph Waldo Emerson’s beliefs, because both thinkers want to empower the nation by empowering the common man.
