I ran across this quote this morning…
“The aim of argument, or of discussion, should not be victory, but progress.” ~Joseph Joupert
Hope you are all having a good holiday break!

This reminds me of a quote I read long ago and have always liked. “If two people are talking and they are constantly agreeing, one of them is not thinking.” I think both of these quotes speak to the value of discussion for the benefit of exploring topics and issues and creating a deeper and larger understanding for all involved.

This quote is important as we work together as an administrative team and use honest dialogue in our discussions. It is important that we recognize the importance of disagreement and how it can lead to progress.

The art of argument and discussion revolves around asssertive dialogue. As a teacher of Skills for Adolescence many years ago with junior high students, we worked on the differences between assertive dialogue vs. agressive dialogue in order to create a deeper and more global understanding. I still use these strategies and tools often when dealing with my students, especially in grades 4 and 5. In our conversations with our students, our teachers, and as administrators, we need to promote assertive dialogue and what this means and why this type of dialogue creates better understanding and openess to communicate. This creates progress.
